Biography

I am a clinical and cognitive psychologist. My core area of research is emotions, focusing on facial expressions and empathy. My lab uses cognitive behavioural methods to understand how people interpret and respond to their own and other people's emotions. For example, one current line of investigation concerns emotional display rules—the beliefs people have about how they should express emotions—and how these relate to emotional health. My lab is also interested in understanding how people relate to computer-generated beings (e.g., virtual humans or avatars).

Available student projects

I am available to supervise PhD, PhD (Clinical Psychology), and Master of Clinical Psychology projects on the following topics:

  • Individual differences in emotional display rules and associations with emotional and social wellbeing (e.g., emotion regulation).
  • Emotional display rules across development.
  • Emotion differentiation, alexithymia, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Contributions of emotion to generous and selfish decision-making.
